A new national assessment in Canada by our very own Jennifer McHenry and team estimates that kelp forests may export 40,000–400,000 tonnes of carbon annually to the deep ocean—comparable to tidal marshes and seagrasses—suggesting real potential, though data gaps remain. Scientists however caution against overstating kelp’s climate benefits, since this could distract from urgent fossil fuel reductions. Still, protecting and restoring kelp offers multiple co-benefits—biodiversity, fisheries, shoreline protection.
